Details, details, details. There are so many details Viva loves when it comes to the world of weddings we decided to start a new monthly feature on the blog, bringing you details we found online that caught our eye and we proceeded to fall absolutely head over heals in love with!

This month's feature is a fabulously unique idea that combines escort cards with a signature drink.

Many couples choose a signature cocktail to serve their guests during cocktail hour and how cool would it be to have their drink double as their escort card, letting them know at which table they'll be seated for dinner.

Everyone knows how much Viva loves engagement sessions! Not only are they a great way to bond with your photographer and get comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding, they're a great excuse to have a professional photog take amazing pictures of you and your bride/groom-to-be in clothes other than your wedding attire on your wedding day. 2011 was a memorable year for Viva both personally and professionally. Along with the addition of a beautiful baby girl to the Viva family, we were honoured to receive several acclamations from the wedding industry and grateful once again to have been chosen by such wonderful couples as their preferred wedding coordinator.

We of course can’t take all the credit for the flawless execution of the many stylish weddings we were a part of in 2011. Viva is so very fortunate to work with the best of the best when it comes to wedding vendors. Every year Viva thanks you for your talent, professionalism, and willingness to go above and beyond to make our couples happy and this year isn’t any different. We couldn’t do it without you!

Viva would also like to send a great big thank you to other wedding planners in the Ottawa area and abroad. While the wedding industry is a competitive one, it takes a strong, confident woman to rise above this and see that working together benefits not only our own business but our clients as well. Viva's so lucky to have developed wonderful relationships and many solid bonds with several talented planners and would like to thank you for your friendship and support.

While we’re sad to see 2011 go, we can’t hold back our excitement for all that lies ahead. A new year brings new weddings and we’re absolutely thrilled about the fabulous couples we’ve booked for 2012. From elaborate city glam to intimate country chic, it’s going to be a great year!

There are two reasons Viva is completely head over heels about one of Ottawa wedding photographer Blair Gable’s recent engagement sessions. 1) Viva loves Elgin Street Diner poutine. 2) Viva loves when an engagement session really represents the couple and in some way tells you something fun about who they are.

Viva’s favourite weddings aren’t always the most glamorous or the most expensive. A wedding full of special touches that represent the couple are. And while the latest trends can be tempting, your wedding day should really include details that exemplify you as a couple - trend or not. Viva believes the same goes for your engagement pictures and this fabulous engagement session shot by Blair demonstrates just that.

After chatting with bride and groom-to-be Kaitlin & Keith, Blair discovered that they ended many dates with a late night poutine at none other than the Elgin Street Diner of course. And so the photo shoot begins. The video below by James Park is a sneak peek at the behind the scenes. Lauren & Greg were married in what was a beautiful ceremony at Blessed Sacrament Parish in the Glebe followed by a fabulous cocktail hour and dinner reception at the Museum of Nature. Lauren was absolutely stunning in her custom Janine Adamyk gown and her bridesmaids all wore Two Birds dresses - The dress you can wear over 15 different ways available at With Love Bridal Boutique!

So many outstanding vendors played a part in making this wedding all that it was. Tulips & Maple made everyone’s mouth water not only during the cocktail hour and dinner but again late night when they brought out the gnocchi poutine. Art-Is-In created the eye catching macaron cake. Delish! Tivoli was responsible for all the floral including the striking centerpieces found on each guest table. Mikaza added to the decor with a stylish lounge area. Of course we can’t forget the music. Virtuosi set the mood at the ceremony, cocktail hour, and during dinner while Prestige Entertainment kept the guests on their feet throughout the reception. And what would an outstanding wedding be without an outstanding photographer? Big thanks to the truly brilliant Miv Fournier for the images below.

Over the past few years there has been an obvious increase in Fall weddings and with an increase in Fall weddings comes the demand for new ideas to help make your Fall wedding unique. Browns, oranges and reds are favourite colours for this time of year and candy apples, roasted nuts, teas and preserves are still guest favour staples but the latest trend perfect for Fall, although still a great idea for any season, is the Fingerprint Tree Guestbook.

Viva loves this unique idea and is excited to see it catching on. Guests simply place a little ink on their finger, stamp their fingerprint as a leaf on the tree, and then sign their name on the print. Voila! With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month we thought this post would be a great way to not only show you some really amazing dresses but to help spread the word on raising money for a good cause.

When Viva first started coordinating weddings back in 2006, one of the fabulous couples who took a leap of faith and booked a new to the industry wedding coordinator helped to confirm not only my love of weddings but my love of couples who aren't afraid to do something a little different.

While hiring a food truck to feed your guests late night has become a staple for most backyard weddings, back in 2006 when candy buffets were the rage a food truck at your wedding was definitely not the norm. Seeing the jaws drop and the anticipation mount when 11pm rolled around and a food truck pulled up on the back lawn was priceless.

Five years later hiring a food truck for your backyard wedding is as common as hiring a florist to create your centerpieces, a dj to play your music, and a photographer to capture images of your day. Five years later I still love seeing the jaws drop and the anticipation mount when 11pm rolls around and a food truck pulls up on the back lawn.

As new ideas grow in popularity and become more and more common however, people start to wonder if they will survive the test of time or slowly fade away. How do you feel about the late night food truck? Whether it’s pogos and poutine, beaver tails or ice cream, are food trucks just the latest trend or are they here to stay?

TICKETS, TICKETS, GET YOUR TICKETS!!

It's that time of year again! Time to attend the Ottawa Wedding Palace Bridal Show. Taking place on September 10th and 11th 2011 not only is this Ottawa's premier wedding show, it's home is now one of Ottawa's newest premier venues - the Ottawa Convention Centre.

Each year Viva posts a Wedding Show Survival Guide to help make your day an enjoyable and productive one. This year, the Ottawa Wedding Palace Bridal Show has come up with their own so we thought we'd share their tips with you.

1. Register online and enter to win the Bride's Night Out prize package!
Make sure you also register when you arrive at the show. Registering at the show will enter you into all of the grand door prize draws.

2. Create a temporary email address to be used while you are planning your wedding.
This way you can delete it when you no longer are interested in receiving special offers or hearing from the vendors.

3. Bring adhesive address labels.
This will save you a lot of time when you enter for prizes at individual booths. Most exhibitors will want to know your wedding date so make sure to add this information to your label along with your email address.

4. Don't forget your pen!
You're going to see so much at the show and talk to so many wonderful vendors that your head will be spinning by the time you head for home! Make sure to write notes on brochures or flyers from your favorite vendors while you're at the show, as you're about to drop them into your bulging goody bag - it'll help you sort out who all was who once you get home and start taking stock of the day! Collect any information you are interested in - take it home to look over again when you have some quiet time.

5. Make it a girl's day out!
Bring your friends, your wedding party, and your mom along to enjoy the big show! This gives them all a chance to feel more involved in your Big Day, and you'll be glad to have objective friends or family there to help you with your planning. Plus - it also means extra hands to help share carrying home all of the loot you're going to gather! (Want to bring the groom? Remind him that there will be delicious samples of all sorts of things, like BBQ and luscious wedding cake!). It is nice if your fiancé attends with you so that you are both involved in the planning process.

6. Make it a weekend event!
The show is open from 11am - 5 pm both days over the weekend - so if you get a bracelet for re-entry (available at registration), you can return for free on Sunday! Visit on Saturday with all of the gals in your wedding party, and then come back with your groom on Sunday to show him what you have discovered! (This works especially well if the groom has a limited amount of time or if your man is allergic to wedding shopping!). Don't forget to take in at least one of the two fashion shows that will take place each day (12:30 & 3:30).

7. Ask lots of questions, that's what the exhibitors are there for!
This is your big chance to talk with all kinds of wedding professionals - so don't be shy! Talk to the vendors and ask questions about their services, get the details on the wedding packages they offer, and how they can best serve you on your very special day! (A great tip: bring along ribbons or swatches with your wedding colors! This can help our vendors best help you!)

8. Bring your cheque book or credit card in case you decide to book services or hold dates with a deposit.
Many vendors will offer special day-of-the-bridal-show discounts, and many vendors or wedding venues book fast, so if you find the perfect photographer or your perfect wedding spot, you will want to be prepared to put down a deposit! Be sure to check on refund policies before giving any money, and read the contract carefully before signing.

9. Wear comfortable shoes (opt for your running shoes instead of the Jimmy Choos) and have a great time!

10. Relax and have fun - this is your wedding. Enjoy every moment - the day will be here and gone before you know it!

Here it is!! Heather & Duane's big day at Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello thanks to Derrick Rice of Union Eleven. A big thank you also goes out to All Seasons Weddings, Groovy Linen, and the amazing Paul Chacra Entertainment. Not only did they provide the duo for the ceremony and cocktail hour but the band 1945 rocked the reception. Outstanding! Needless to say, the dance floor was packed the entire evening. Even between courses! In my next life I will be hunting Paul Chacra down to play at my wedding. Enjoy the images (One of Viva's faves is the framed picture that was on display of Duane proposing to Heather. He got down on one knee at the Kentucky Derby. LOVE that it was captured on film!) and congratulations to Heather & Duane on what was a fabulous wedding day!

Heather & Duane were married at one of Viva's favourite venues, Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello in Montebello Quebec. Not only do we love coordinating at LCM, we love working with Derrick Rice so this wedding was a real treat as we got to do both.

Derrick recently joined forces with Ottawa wedding photographer Andrew Geddes and together they created Union Eleven. Derrick and Andrew can be found in their new location at 619 Bank Street in the Glebe, right next door to The Flour Shoppe. HANG IT WITH STYLE!!

Viva loves candid shots. The images your photographer takes you’re not aware of that truly capture the emotion of your day are priceless. I know, I know. You’re probably sick of hearing us talk about how much we love candid shots but it’s true. When the many talented photographers we are so fortunate to work with send us images of our wonderful couples on their wedding day, it’s as though we’re experiencing the anticipation and excitement all over again.

Viva also loves the details. Details are a big deal for most brides and having them captured on film is a must. The pictures of her stunning dress, designer shoes and beautiful bouquet are all favourites. And we can’t remember a time when a bride didn’t request that her photographer sneak into the reception venue prior to their guests being seated to snap shots of the exceptional details she put so much thought into to ensure that their wedding truly did represent them.

While we understand why most brides live for these images, there’s one detail shot Viva can absolutely live without - The dreaded “stunning bridal gown on a plastic retail hanger”. It just kills us to see this. So much so that Viva now carries a hanger in our emergency kit to use whenever this detail is overlooked. I mean the bride certainly doesn't need to worry about a hanger on her wedding day, does she? Whether she got a great deal on it off the rack, bought it on consignment, found it at a stylish boutique, or had a custom couture gown handmade, so much consideration goes into choosing the perfect dress. Why not hang it with style?

The images below from Melissa & Steve’s backyard wedding were captured by Garrett Elliott Photography and boy does the shot of her dress make us happy. Not only is the hanger not plastic, it’s personalized with Melissa’s soon to be married name. What a great keepsake! EMILY & TIM GET MARRIED!!

As much as we love it when our couples are all about extravagant details and decor, sometimes keeping it simple is what best represents them and I must admit I’m just as head over heels about these weddings as I am about the extravagant ones.

Probably the most laid back easy going couple out there, Emily & Tim had their wedding ceremony and reception at The Wakefield Mill back in June and Viva was absolutely thrilled to help them with the planning and execution of their intimate day.

Just a few of Viva’s favourite details of their wedding:

~ Emily & Tim were married on the MacLaren House lawn. Two rows of chairs were set up for immediate family and the remaining guests gathered around creating a very warm, intimate ceremony.
~ Emily had nine flower girls. Yes, nine! It was important for her to include all of these lovely girls in the ceremony so they lined up creating an aisle for Emily to walk down and as she did, she was handed flowers from each of them which created her bouquet.
~ Instead of flowers, the girls in the wedding party all carried handmade pinwheels and the guys wore pinwheel boutonnieres.
~ While the ceremony took place, Emily & Tim’s rings were passed around so that each guest could hold and bless them with their best wishes for the soon to be newlyweds.
~ Representing the librarian in Emily, Emily & Tim’s guests signed their congratulations to the bride & groom on library cards which were held in card catalogue drawers.
~ After a fabulous cocktail hour full of wine and tasty hors d’oeuvres, guests visited several food stations (offering pasta and seafood crepes to name but two) and could help themselves to the most amazing cheese platter in honour of the groom’s love affair with cheese.

THE GETAWAY CAR

While there are many old school wedding traditions Viva has been happy to see disappear, the getaway car is not one of them. Okay, we should be specific. The time honoured tradition of the wedding party sneaking out during the reception to toilet paper the bride and groom’s car, wrap it in cellophane and fill the air vents with confetti is not what we’re talking about. Having an actual getaway car is.

A common past tradition, wedding guests would gather outside to officially send off the bride and groom earlier in the evening and then continue to enjoy the reception without them. When newlyweds decided to ditch the early exit, choosing instead to party the night away with their guests and often being the last to leave, the getaway car became obsolete.

Well Viva’s happy to report it’s making a comeback! Newlyweds aren't necessarily leaving their reception early, but after exchanging vows they definitely have a car to drive away in with the Just Married decor to prove it. We wonder if Will & Kate having their own getaway car had something to do with it.

Of course it never hurts to have a Plan B, such as a tent or alternate indoor venue when your Plan A is an open air outdoor space in case the clouds appear, but when it comes to your pictures rain can make for some fun and really unique photos if you’re willing.

Chicago based photographer Kenny Kim had this to say about photographing couples in the rain -

There is an old saying "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." At every wedding, there is going to be a surprise waiting us around the corner. Regardless of what that surprise might be, we as wedding photographers try to make the best of all the situations. Inevitably, we are going to have days where Mother Nature will try to hinder the day. Instead of being discouraged by the situation, I think of it as an opportunity to get creative with photos. A wedding day is not about the weather but it is a celebration of a couple's commitment to spend the rest of their lives together. Capturing their emotion is more important than having nice weather. When humans lose one of their senses, the other senses heighten. As a photographer, when we are faced with limited options, our creativity gets heightened and often times we tend to see things that we did not notice before. Some of my favorite photos from weddings have come from days when it rained.

So why not go with it? Don’t let the rain ruin your wedding day! Find some fun rain boots, colorful umbrellas, and show the rain who’s boss. And last but not least, remember the Italian saying “Sposa bagnata, sposa fortunata” which literally translates to “Wet Bride, Lucky Bride”. Traditionally, if it rains on your wedding day you will have a very fortunate marriage. The rain symbolizes abundance and good luck which will spill over onto the new family.

MEGHANN & WILL GET MARRIED!!

While spending a rainy May afternoon working on the details of one of Viva's upcoming weddings at the Museum of Nature, we got to thinking about our very first wedding at this fantastic venue. Viva was lucky to coordinate only the second wedding to take place at the Museum after the extensive renovations were completed last year and could not have been happier with the outcome. The event space is spectacular and the staff are truly top notch.

You'd think coordinating a wedding for a couple getting married in Ottawa but living in New York would be somewhat of a challenge but thanks to Meghann's wonderfully supportive family here in town and the wonders of email, the planning process was not only a breeze but so much fun!

ONE PRINCESS BRIDE, TWO LOOKS

It’s becoming more and more common for a bride to show off two different looks on her wedding day. Viva has seen this over the past few years with our own brides and previously blogged about celebrity wedding planner David Tutera’s line of wedding gowns including the “Eva” and “Fergie” - dresses that start out full length for the ceremony with the lower part of the skirt removable to reveal a short party dress for the reception - so it came as no surprise that Kate Middleton chose to change her look too. Designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, Kate married her prince charming in a fitted white v-neck gown with a long sleeved lace overlay and 2.7 metre train and then transformed into a strapless satin gazar evening dress with diamante embroidered detail around the waist, topping it off with a white angora bolero cardigan. Perfect.

I know how absurd it sounds for a wedding planner to say this but... Viva never understood a bride's attachment to her wedding gown. Don't get me wrong, it was always exciting to hear one of Viva's brides-to-be describe her dream dress, see her fill with emotion when finding "the one" and jaw droping to see her glowing in it on her wedding day, but why all this fuss over a dress? Then... Viva got married. And yes (two and a half years later) my beautiful Mikaela gown is still hanging in my closet, my attachment to it making it impossible for me to let it go. Since getting married, not only did I gain a new appreciation for the relationship between a bride and her wedding gown, but I just can't get enough of them! And that's why Wedding Dress Wednesday posts now appear each month on the blog.

These images were taken at Stonefields Heritage Farm in Carleton Place and yes, the lovely ladies modelling these gorgeous gowns from With Love Bridal Boutique should look familiar. They're none other than Sarah Walsh who has been a long time preferred vendor of ours when it comes to makeup & bridal jewelry and Melissa Johnston whom we had the pleasure of working with back in 2009 on Krystel & Ivan's wedding at Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello. Melissa's images of their wedding were later featured on Style Me Pretty. Viva isn't usually a fan of recycling blog posts but with so many of our 2011 brides-to-be heading to the Wedding Palace Bridal Show this weekend, we thought our previous 2009 post "Wedding Show Survival Guide" might come in handy. Enjoy!!

Wedding Shows are attended by thousands of brides-to-be (and future grooms) each year. Not only can they be a fun way to spend the day, they’re also the perfect networking tool when planning a wedding because they allow you to meet with so many vendors in a short period of time all under one roof. But in order to make the most of your day and keep it as fun and stress free as possible, you need to have a game plan.Click on the image above for details on The Wedding Palace Bridal Show taking place here in Ottawa this weekend and review the tips below before going to ensure your day is an enjoyable and productive one.

1. The early bird gets the worm - Find out when the doors open and be one of the first brides there. If you wait until the afternoon it will be crowded and harder to get around with longer waits to talk to the vendors you’re looking to hire.

2. Slip on your Uggs for this event - Hard concrete floors mixed with hours of walking around from booth to booth can make for very sore feet at the end of the day so your shoes should be comfortable ones.

3. H2O – A simple bottle of water can cost over $3 so throw a couple in your bag before leaving the house in the morning. It can get hot, the air can get very dry and after spending the day sampling cake and chocolate covered strawberries - you’re going to need it!

4. Don’t bring the whole posse - While it may sound like a fun excuse to get all the girls together there are going to be A LOT of people there and it may be difficult at times to navigate through the crowd. Sticking to a group of two or three is best, otherwise your time may be spent trying to find your crew instead of focusing on finding vendors for your big day.

5. Map it out - All Wedding Shows have a website that lists the vendors who are going to be there and usually include a floor map with their booth location as well. Take a look at the list and map if available before hand. Check out the vendors’ websites ahead of time and try to determine which ones you want to talk to. Highlight them on the floor map so they’re easy to find and when you’re at the show, only take the business cards and brochures from the vendors you’re interested in. It will make it less confusing when you’re weeding through your bag at home.

6. Q & A – Prepare questions ahead of time and bring a pen to take notes. You will be talking to many vendors all with different services to sell and information to give. Make quick notes after talking with each of them so you will remember what they said and what you liked/didn’t like about them.

7. Patience is a virtue - If you really want to talk to a vendor don’t get discouraged if their booth is crowded by other brides-to-be. Walk around and come back later. If the crowd around them doesn’t ever seem to get any smaller, wait for the fashion show to start. The floor usually thins out a little when the show is on.

8. Don’t give into the pressure - You’re sure to run into vendors who will tell you that they only have one opening left for your wedding date. While the best vendors do book up quickly, there are a lot of vendors at the show to talk to so don’t feel like you need to sign with the first one you come across.

9. Draws, draws and more draws - If you’re hoping to win one of the many draws a Wedding Show has to offer come prepared with pre printed cards that have your name, address, phone number and email address on them. This will save you time at the show and make entering the draws a piece of cake.

10. Have fun! - After all, you’re getting MARRIED!! Whether you’re going with your fiancé, mom or maid of honour make the most of it. Go early, get down to business, and then head out for a great lunch and a cocktail or two to thank them for sharing in a productive day.

A winter bride's wedding attire wouldn't be complete without a luxurious white faux fur cape draped over her shoulders. But what’s a November bride to do who’s not looking for the winter wedding look, yet still needs to stay warm (and stylish) on those cool November days? Wear a cardigan of course! Not only will a cardigan help keep you warm, it adds that punch of colour so many brides are looking to add to their wedding day wardrobe.

Adding colour to a bride’s traditional white wedding attire is not a new trend but something that we’ve seen, in different forms, for years. It began with the dyed crinoline. Next, we tossed aside the typical white wedding shoe and brighly coloured chic & sassy designer footwear took their place - often symbolizing the bride’s “something blue”. Now... Viva had so much fun working with Melissa & Brent this past year planning their October 9th 2010 wedding at the NAC. Melissa was a coordinators dream! Always keeping us in the loop, it was a sad week at Viva la wedding when an email from this fabulous bride didn't appear in our inbox. And the constant communication paid off. The end result was an absolutely flawless wedding day for this amazing couple. Here are a few images of the newlyweds captured by Ron of RZ Photo. PIE POPS! MMM, MMM GOOD!!

In the past Viva's blogged about wedding cakes, cupcakes, cake pops, and even cake shooters so we thought it was only fair to give pie a little love too. And what better way to do it than with these pie pops. Fill them with your favorite jelly or pureed fruit, seal the edges, then brush them with a little egg white before baking for that golden flaky texture. Mmm, mmm good!

Whether you display them with other tasty sweets on the dessert table at your wedding or wrap them up as favors for your guests to take home at the end of the night, they'll be hard to resist.

Candy buffets, dessert buffets, and the list goes on. While these buffets are all the rage right now lets face it, not everyone has a sweet tooth. We just love this twist on the sweet buffet and couldn't resist posting images of it for you all to see.

This amazing cheese buffet table was created by Sunday Suppers for Martha Stewart's Wedding Blog: The Bride's Guide With Darcy Miller. While the cheese looks amazing on its own, displaying french baguettes, pears, and honey add the perfect amount of colour and shape to the table - not to mention they all help to highlight and compliment the taste of the cheese.

Looking for something different to serve your guests late night? A little cheese sounds good to me!

THE BRIDE WORE VERA

In the past few months we've seen many high profile weddings in which the brides chose Vera Wang to design their stunning gowns. Chelsea Clinton wore Vera when she married investment banker Marc Mezvinsky on July 31 2010. Alicia Keys married producer/rapper Swizz Beatz (aka Kasseem Dean) that very same weekend and looked stunning in Vera as well. Other famous Vera brides include Avril Lavigne, Alyssa Milano, Kloe Kardashian and Ivanka Trump.

A native New Yorker who spent her career at the forefront of fashion, Vera Wang began a sweeping makeover of the bridal industry in 1990 with the opening of her flagship salon at the Carlyle Hotel in New York City. Today the salon continues to showcase her collections known for sophisticated drama, feminine detailing and a modern approach to bridal design.

Hilary Duff is the latest lucky lady to wear Vera on her wedding day. Hilary and former Ottawa Senators hockey player Mike Comrie tied the knot on August 14th 2010 at a private 1920s estate in Santa Barbara California. Surrounded by a canopy of flowers, Hilary and Mike exchanged vows at sunset as the bride's sister, maid of honor Haylie Duff, and 100 of the couple's family members and closest friends watched.

When it came to what to wear for the most important event in her life (so far), Hilary had a clear idea of her dream gown. "I really wanted something that was deconstructed, not perfect and prim and proper." Vera Wang ran with the idea, creating a breathtakingly romantic, blush silk tulle and organza mermaid look, adorned with giant blossoms made specially for her famous client. "This was the perfect dress for Hilary - fragile, youthful, sexy garden party." explains Vera, who worked directly with Hilary on the design.

It wasn’t long ago that the Cake Pop was the latest trend in wedding favours and the newest addition to the dessert buffet, but we all know how long trends can last. Move over Cake Pop, here comes the Cake Shooter!

The Cake Shooter consists of three layers of cake and frosting in a plastic cylinder contraption that allows you to “shoot” the cake into your mouth. Mmm! Sounds good doesn’t it? Tori Spelling thought so - she served them at her daughter Stella’s 2nd birthday party!

Sprinkles Custom Cakes is the creator of these yummy treats. Located in Winter Park Florida, they do offer shipping but unfortunately not to Canada. So all you wonderful Ottawa area bakers out there... Please bring the Cake Shooter to this great city of ours. I’d like to place an order!

THE ICE CREAM PARLOUR

We've all seen the candy buffet, the cookie/dessert table, the chocolate fountain, make your own s'mores and of course the cupcake tower. One of Viva's recent couples had a popcorn buffet and almost all outdoor weddings we coordinate include a late night meal of poutine and pogos provided by the local chip truck that parks itself on the front lawn. There seems to be no end to the creative ideas our brides and grooms-to-be are coming up with to add a little fun to the food served at their wedding. While we haven't yet seen the DIY Sunday table first hand, after viewing the images below, we're all for it!

THE WAIT IS OVER!

Since announcing their engagement back in December 2009 everyone has been talking about Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher's wedding. Where would they get married? What would she wear? As time went on there seemed to be more and more questions with no real answers to satisfy inquiring minds. With confidentiality agreements signed by all those involved, no one was talkling. Well now the wait is over!

People magazine bought the rights to publish images of Carrie and Mike's big day and with the latest issue now on stands, anyone who didn't have the priviledge of attending the much anticipated event in person can now see the gorgeous dresses she wore and read all about the fabulous details by simply picking up a copy.

Here are a few details to tie you over until you have it in hand...

- Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher were wed on July 10 2010 in a white tent set up on the lawn of Georgia's Ritz-Carleton Reynolds Plantation resort, their dinner reception was held in the ballroom.

- Mike played golf with his groomsmen the morning of the wedding while Carrie got ready with her bridal party.

- Monique Lhuillier designed both wedding gowns. Carrie wore a Chantilly lace and silk organza gown for the ceremony and later changed into a strapless cocktail dress to dance the night away.

- The tiara Carrie wore for the ceremony was a gift from Mike and contained more than 40 carats of diamonds. When Carrie changed into her cocktail dress she also changed her headpiece to a custom band by bando. The gorgeous sweeping feather was created by hand stitching a mix of vintage brooches and earrings as well as some shiny new Swarovski crystal onto silk organza.

- Carrie's nephew Max was the ring bearer, Mike's cousin Hanna was the flower girl, and of course Carrie's dog Ace walked down the aisle with them in a Swarovski crystal-encrusted pink tuxedo.

- Carrie entered to a string quartet playing Wagner's "Bridal Chorus".

- Carrie and Mike exchanged vows beneath an arbor of birch trees and roses created by Nashville's Branches Event Florist.

- Painted hockey pucks were used as escort cards displaying the guest's name and table number.

- The ballroom, where guests were treated to a four course dinner, was dripping with 5,000 crystals and lit in shades of pink. The tables were covered with vintage toile tablecloths and tuxedo folded napkins were accented with crystals.

- The cupcake tower was made by one of Carrie's bridesmaids Ivey Childers, owner of Ivey Cake in Franklin, Tenn.

- Carrie surprised Mike by getting contemporary Christian singer Brandon Heath to perform their first dance, "Love Never Fails".

And last but not least, who helped Carrie and Mike plan this fabulous day...

- Carrie and Mike's wedding planner was none other than Jayne Bubis of JB Events.

VIVA LA BABY!!

Before the rumours start flying, Viva didn't just have a baby. And while we know that many wedding coordinators also plan events, we've had to regretfully decline these requests in the past as Viva la wedding is and will always be only about weddings... except this once. When your BFF is expecting, who can resist the urge to throw her a baby shower to show her just how happy you are for her and how much she is loved?

Prior to the wedding season kicking into high gear, Viva (along with the help of a couple of our favourite wedding vendors) planned a little celebration in honour of a precious baby girl who was getting ready to enter the world.

Here are a few detail shots taken by the wonderful Melissa Johnston. Thanks to Flowers Talk for all the beautiful flowers and the Manzanita wishing tree, The Candy Store for providing the cotton candy and pink rock candy on a stick as well as the raspberry and lemon coconut macarons, and to Little Cakes who baked the delicious pink lemonade and vanilla cupcakes of course!

THIS MONTH'S VIVA LA WEDDING Q&A

A - What was once unheard of, more and more couples are now choosing to live together before marriage. Excited to set up their home, a shopping spree to the nearest department store soon follows their move in date. As their wedding approaches and guests start to inquire about where the future bride and groom have registered, couples who now have a fully stocked home struggle to find items to register for. THE TRADITIONAL WEDDING REGISTRY

Is moving into a new home the next step in celebrating the beginning of your life together as husband and wife? If so, unlike many couples now marrying later in life who already live together and have had the time to set up their home prior to getting married, you’re starting from scratch.

When it comes to selecting items for your registry it's easy to get tempted into including non-essential gadgets and appliances only to find they end up collecting dust in your cupboards months after the big day. Like a great pair of jeans or that little black dress in your wardrobe, it's important to have a solid base for your registry. Created by Weddingbells, here's a list of 10 essential items that will never go out of style.

1. Fine China - Traditionally fine china has always been at the centre of any wedding registry. While you may be hesitant to include it for fear it's too expensive or you'll never use it, it is something you'll have forever and could even pass on to your children one day. Fine china comes in both bone and porcelain and tends to be more expensive than everyday china. It's a worthwhile investment that will make home entertaining a treat.

2. Stemware - Including stemware on your registry is a must. You can register for both crystal stemware and casual stemware, depending on how you plan to entertain. It's important to include white and red wineglasses, as well as champagne flutes and beverage glasses. Also consider the style of your china to be sure everything co-ordinates. Ideally, you want to register for at least as many glasses as settings.

3. Bed Linens - Considering we spend a third of our lives sleeping, it makes perfect sense to include plush and cozy bed linens you can both enjoy on your registry. Be sure to include at least one set of quality cotton white sheets. When looking at the thread count of Egyptian cotton, the higher the number, the lighter and softer it feels.

4. Everyday Dinnerware - Also referred to as everyday china, some couples may choose to register for everyday dinnerware in addition to or instead of fine china. It's more affordable for your guests, with many standard five-piece place settings starting at $30. White is a great basic if you're starting to build a collection, and don't feel like bone china or porcelain is off limits, especially if you're only going for one set of dinnerware.

5. Pots & Pans - Now is the time to upgrade to the quality you wish you had. Since quality does matter, don't be afraid to include name brands like Calphalon, Le Creuset and All-Clad. Be sure to register for some pieces separately (open stock), so you can accommodate guests with a variety of budgets.

6. Knives - Every kitchen needs a good set of knives. Higher quality knives have high carbon, stainless steel blades, sharpen easily and also resist rust. The basics to consider include a chef's knife, utility knife, paring knife, serrated knife and carving knife. Be sure to test each knife in your hands. It should be comfortable and well balanced.

7. Bath Towels - Like bed linens are basics for the bedroom, bath towels are basics for the bathroom. Look for 100% cotton towels, which are the most absorbent. Consider registering for three sets per person, also taking into account additional sets for guests.

8. Everyday Flatware - After you've chosen your dinnerware, ensure that your flatware matches the number of settings. A traditional setting includes a dinner knife and fork, teaspoon, tablespoon and salad fork. When choosing material, stainless steel is a great everyday option because it doesn't rust, tarnish or chip.

9. Bakeware - Every newlywed nest needs bakeware. Even if you're not a big-time baker, you'll want to include cookie sheets, muffin tins, a cooling rack or two and a casserole dish. Aluminum bakeware is a sturdy option and many also have non-stick coatings, which will help make cleanup easier.

10. Mixing Bowls - No matter what you're preparing in the kitchen, mixing bowls come in handy. Look for a set of bowls that are available in a handful of sizes and can be stored within each other. Glass bowls are the most versatile because they can be heated on the stove or in the microwave, while stainless steel are light and won't chip or break.

MY LOVE OF GREAT PHOTOGRAPHERS

Being in the wedding industry not only do I have the opportunity to meet the many photographers we are so lucky to have access to in the Ottawa area but as a wedding coordinator I also have the privilege of working with them and let me tell you, the truly great ones amaze me!

Planning a wedding as you may or may not know is a long process and a lot of hard work but the end result is always worth it and I love the role I play in making it all happen! I get to be the support my couples need throughout the planning process and the one who makes sure all their hard work pays off on their wedding day. And when their wedding day arrives I tell all my couples the same thing – It may have taken many long months to plan this day but now that it's here it’s going to fly by so take the time to savour each and every moment of it… and thank God you have a great photographer! Okay, maybe I don't say the photographer part out loud but I definitely think it.

I remember looking back at my own wedding pictures and thinking just that – thank God we had a great photographer! The details I worked so hard on to make sure our wedding day was a reflection of "us", the chair I had reserved at our ceremony honouring the memory of my dad, the professional pictures I'm so happy to now have with my mom, and the beautiful posed shots of our wedding party, family and friends. All these pictures make me smile. A good photographer will provide you with these wonderful images of your wedding but it's a photographer who is truly able to capture the emotion of your day that makes him great! The loving way my husband looked at me, the laughs (and tears) we shared, the special moments between us. If our photographer had not caught these on film I never would have known they happened.

These pictures were not posed for nor planned, they were just moments throughout our day that our photographer captured because he knew they would later mean something to us. Pictures that, regardless of the time that has passed since our wedding, are still able to bring back all the emotion I felt on that day and make it seem as though no time has passed at all.

Like a fabulous work of art, a Rivini bridal gown designed by the one and only Rita Vinieris is worthy of appreciation. We chose "Savia" as this month's Wedding Dress Wednesday feature for just that reason. The strapless floorlength ballgown silhouette with beautifully detailed drop waist is quite simply... a masterpiece!

While working for renowned designers like Lacoste Canada in the mid-80s, Rita was also creating evening gowns for friends and family on the side. When two of her close friends got engaged and were having a hard time finding wedding dresses that were simple yet elegant in style, Rita designed the dresses for them. "As it turned out, I really loved working with the fabrics and silhouettes. After that, it was natural for me to move into the bridal realm".

ban.do was created by Jen and Jamie - two stylists from LA who are inspired by color, wild about cupcakes (hence their motto "dress like a cupcake should feel") and enjoy laughing until soda comes out their noses. With a bio like that, how can you not love these two?!

Their pieces have been featured on many a celebrity head (Taylor Swift is a big fan!) and in countless magazines (Glamour, The Oprah Magazine, People, US, In Touch, InStyle Weddings, and Martha Stewart Weddings to name just a few).

Recently launched, Black Label is their couture collection. With a nod to hollywood glamour and a wink at many current trends, these pieces are all either one of a kind or limited edition.

THEY'RE NOT FRESH, BUT I LOVE THEM ANYWAY!

I love fresh flowers! Not only do I think they look beautiful in the hands of a bride as she walks down the aisle; hanging from shepherds hooks at the ceremony site; as centerpieces on the table at dinner; and throughout the venue as decor - they also look great on the corner of my desk as I work on checklists and timelines for the day of. Fresh flowers make me happy!

The flowers below make me happy too. Granted they're not fresh, but they are just so original and absolutely stunning it's hard not to love them.

Made of balsa wood, that's right - wood, this bouquet seems quite life like until you take a closer look. Check out Krislyn to see their fabulous corsages and head pieces made of wood as well.

These bouquets were created by Amanda Heer of Fantasy Floral - Home Of The Brooch Bouquets. Each bouquet is made up of several brooches in different sizes, styles and colours giving you a very vintage look.

And these handcrafted beauties are made entirely of pieces of silk, linen, cotton, and upholstery fabric by Milkpod Studio. Milkpod also makes corsages, boutonieres, centerpieces, pomanders, and really sweet hair clips out of fabirc too.

THE CHIC CHANDELIER

The chandelier trend continues this year. They're poping up on wedding stationary begining with the invitations and then carried on through to the programs, menus and labels for guest favours. We've seen them hung in tents for backyard weddings and from the branches of large trees around outdoor ceremony sites. Sometimes their use is practical, they provide lighting at night. Sometimes their sole purpose is decor. Regardless, when done right, incorporating chandeliers into your wedding can give it that chic vintage feel so many brides are after.

We just couldn't resist these images from Elizabeth Messina's wedding. Elizabeth collected the chandeliers for more than a year (many of them now hang in her home) to create this oh so chic setting. Wouldn't you just love to dine at that table?

LOUNGING AT YOUR WEDDING

It may have taken Ottawa a little while to catch on, but over the past two years it has become more and more difficult to glance through a bridal magazine or wedding blog and not see a bride and groom showing off the posh lounge area at their reception. Renting lounge furniture is now the rage. It not only adds a unique design element to your wedding but also offers your guests a chic yet comfortable space to kick back, relax and mingle with others who were not seated at their table for dinner.

For couples looking to create a fabulous space like this at their upcoming wedding, check out Mikaza Home. Their original boutique shop can still be found at 1154 Bank Street in Ottawa but due to popular demand, Mikaza is now celebrating the opening of an additional showroom at 120 Du Portage in Hull. Cassandra Cherneski of The Florida Bride's Blog offers the following five tips as general guidelines to creating a fabulous lounge space at your wedding.

Choose the physical space.
For some reception venues, this may be easier than others. Perhaps your venue already has a separate little enclave that would be perfect for a tucked-away lounge space. But if you’re dealing with an enormous ballroom, you’ll have to get a little bit creative. Try using pipe and drape to delineate a separate area for your lounge. Or group your dinner tables in one section, and place your lounge area in its own corner of the ballroom.
For reception venues with outdoor space, this is the perfect place to put a lounge, provided the weather will be comfortable. The comfortable furnishings and outdoor breezes will definitely inspire your guests to put your lounge area to good use!

Select your furnishings.
Your furniture is the foundation for the entire look of the lounge. Typical lounge furniture items include sofas, loveseats, benches, and ottomans. You can mix and match these items to create a customized space all your own. Most major metropolitan areas have a rental company that provides these items, so try googling “wedding lounge furniture” and see what you find. Your event planner should have connections as well, and may even be able to offer you a discount!
Some tips for your furniture: I love to keep the furnishings all one color. This way you can create a neutral base for your accessories, which helps them really pop. I also like to match the styling of your furniture to the overall feel of the event. For example, for a shabby-chic wedding I would choose Victorian-looking furniture with curved backs, rolled arms, and carved wooden feet. For a modern wedding, try all-white leather, and geometrically shaped pieces.

Pick your pillows.
Almost every successful lounge area uses pillows to create “pops” of color and to customize the space. Depending on your overall look, you could get away with just a few pillows, or you could use tons of them. Typically, your rental company has these; but you can also find great pillows at home-décor stores, often at prices comparable to or less than rental prices. Use your pillows to tie the space to other areas of your reception, and to incorporate your wedding colors. Look for pillows with unique textures and embellishments. You may also consider pillows made of luxe fabrics, such as dupioni silk or tucked taffeta.

Accessorize the space.
Don’t forget the little touches that add character and personality to your space! Think residential elements: carpets, lamps, candles, floral arrangements. Incorporate the unexpected. If your lounge space is outdoors, don’t neglect your overhead space. Can you string lights or paper lanterns above? If your space is near a tree, think pomander balls or votive lanterns hanging from the branches.
One caveat when adding accessories: keep it simple. You don’t want your sleek space to become cluttered.

Light up your lounge.
Last but not least, add lighting! It may be as simple as groupings of votives or pillar candles on “coffee tables.” Or you may want to rent elaborate par can lighting. For those going for the modern look, some rental companies are offering LED “glow cubes” and benches. For a beachy theme, the tiki torch really sets a mood. You want your guests to bask in a sultry glow in your lounge space. Leave the lighting low enough to be romantic, but don’t leave your guests in the dark!

UNDER THE BIG TENT

Viva is a huge fan of backyard tented weddings. Simply put, we adore them. Everything about a backyard wedding makes us happy. The fresh air, the freedom of being outside, dancing the night away under the stars and the intimate feel they seem to have regardless of the number of guests present.

With all that goodness however comes a heck of a lot of work. Unless you've made it a habit of hosting large events in the past, chances are you don't have stored in your garage a tent, 30 tables, 300 chairs, a dance floor, and all the linens, dishes, etc, etc, etc needed to pull a backyard wedding off.

Unlike a downtown hotel or conference centre who because of the many events they host will already have these items on site, you'll need to bring them in yourself. Fortunately Ottawa is full of great rental places to help you out.

Thinking of having a tented backyard wedding? Here is a checklist of just a few items you'll need to rent and things to consider.

Who knew that when the cupcake craze hit Ottawa a few years back it would turn out to be more than just a passing fad lasting a season or two at best. Whether they're replacing the traditional cake at your wedding or simply being served as part of the late night buffet, cupcakes are here to stay.

The cupcake has really evolved over time. From the mouth watering choices in flavours of cake and icing to the many creative ways to decorate and display them, there's no such thing as the "standard" cupcake anymore.

THIS MONTH'S VIVA LA WEDDING Q&A

Q - We have a four year old son and can't imagine not having him at our wedding. There are also a lot of young children in our family and we would love for them to be present on our wedding day as well. Can you give us a few tips on having a child friendly wedding that will help make it more enjoyable for the kids (and their parents too)?

A - Take a child out of his or her normal surroundings, dress them in uncomfortable formal clothes, break their routine, place them in an adult setting - it won’t be long before they are tired and bored. They also have a short attention span and may need a little help if you want them to make it through the day. How can you keep them entertained and having fun? Here are a few tips so that not only will they enjoy themselves at your wedding, but their parents will be able to enjoy themselves too.

Offer a kids meal - While you may be excited for your guests to try the oven roasted AAA rib eye served with exotic mustards and creamed horseradish that melted in your mouth at your food tasting let's face it, the kids at your wedding probably aren't going to be all that excited to eat it. Offer them something that will please their palates like pizza, chicken fingers or mini hot dogs and make sure to ask your venue/caterer if they can be served first. Especially at an evening reception seeing as it will probably be well past their normally scheduled eating time when you sit down for dinner.

Arrange for childcare - Having someone on hand to watch over the kids, making sure they're not getting into the wedding cake before it's officially cut or dipping their little fingers into the candy bar and overdosing on sugar before the night has even begun, can be a real life saver. If your wedding is taking place at a hotel/resort they may already offer this service on-site.

Hire a professional magician, balloon artist or children's entertainer. Not only will this keep them entertained but it adds a fun aspect to the day that's especially for them, and can sometimes be fun for the adults too.

Create special areas with activities for the kids - Set up a children's table using butcher block paper as the tablecloth with crayons for colouring. A children's wedding activity book is a great way to keep them busy and they can take it home afterwards as a memento of your day. The book can include colouring pages, crosswords, and word searches depending on their age.

Goodie bags for each child are a nice touch. Fill the bags with bead sets, bubbles, colouring kits, pipe cleaners, disposible cameras, juice boxes and a few little snacks.

If your venue allows for it, set up a dvd in a separate room along with puzzles, board games and crafts to keep them entertained.

Great find!! - These stuffed paper dolls from Anthropologie are super cute! Included are five water-based markers kids can use to create their own unique dolls. The cool thing about them is that when they get home and days later decide the doll needs a new look, simply throw it in the wash and start all over again.

A KINDERGARTEN WEDDING

Every year the Kindergarten class at Berry College’s Elementary School (in Mount Berry Georgia) puts on a Kindergarten Wedding. They study a letter a week. For M they study marriage and have a wedding. It’s the highlight of the year and it’s exciting to have your name drawn as the bride and groom.

They learn about loving one another and take vows to be friends forever. It’s simply adorable. It includes a first dance, cake, and bouquet/garter toss. It’s just like a real wedding... only miniature. Each child brings in a picture of their parents at their wedding. They learn about commitment and the love their parents share. Each child has a role. Whether it’s a reading, a song, bridesmaid, minister, or ring bearer. Everyone is involved.

This wedding feels like it’s in fast forward speed. From getting ready to the end of the reception, it all happens in about two and a half hours so we were running around as fast as we could to capture the day.
